BID REF: RFP/CHAING/ORSZINC/01
SPECIFICATIONS AND INSTRUCTIONS TO BIDDERS:
The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to strengthening integrated health systems in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) and expanding access to care and treatment for HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, cancer, and other diseases. For more information, please visit: http://www.clintonhealthaccess.org
The RAND Corporation is a research organization that develops objective solutions to public policy challenges to help make communities worldwide safer, more secure, healthier, and more prosperous. RAND is nonprofit, nonpartisan, and committed to the public interest.
Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death for children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Nigeria accounts for almost 13% of these deaths globally, with approximately ~100,000 Nigerian children dying each year due to diarrheal illnesses. Oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to treat and prevent diarrhea effectively. One promising approach for increasing ORS use is delivering the product directly to the home for free prior to a child having a case of diarrhea.
CHAI is designing and implementing a program in Bauchi, Nigeria, to distribute free ORS and zinc co-packs to all households with children under age 5. Alongside the program, CHAI will be working with RAND to conduct a randomized controlled trial (RCT) to estimate the effect of free and convenient provision of ORS and zinc on subsequent usage of ORS and zinc by children under five years with diarrhea.
CHAI and the RAND Corporation invite interested and capable research agencies to submit proposals for the study “The impact of pre-emptive home delivery of ORS + zinc on treatment for child diarrhea in Bauchi, Nigeria – the At Home Trial.”
