Overview

CHAI began working with the government of Cambodia in 2005 to reduce HIV by introducing better treatments for adults and children and working to eliminate mother-to-child transmission. Today, we partner with the Ministry of Health towards its goal of achieving universal healthcare, working across 11 programs, including maternal and child health and infectious and noncommunicable diseases. We bring a strong focus on health system strengthening at the primary healthcare and hospital levels. We have dedicated teams working on human resources for health, diagnostics, data for decision-making, digital health, and, increasingly, health financing. We are continuing to explore new ways to drive lifesaving change.

In the past four years alone, CHAI has expanded our support to the Ministry across many critical but overlooked health programs. For instance, since 2020, we have worked closely with the Department for Hospital Services to ensure affordable access to high-quality medical oxygen. In 2023, we demonstrated the feasibility of a ‘hub-and-spoke’ oxygen production and distribution model that provides a “win-win” approach for health facilities and patients. We are now working to scale this model across the country. We are also focused on increasing access to assistive technology in Cambodia, working closely with the National Program for Eye Health to scale up vision services in schools and advocate for the inclusion of persons with disabilities into Cambodia’s social protection schemes. These efforts aim to serve the nearly 2.2 million Cambodians who have a mobility-related disability and for whom free and high-quality physical rehabilitation services can be lifesaving.
