Universal health coverage (UHC) cannot be realized without an adequate health workforce and in particular community health workers (CHW) can make a considerable contribution towards achieving UHC. The Government of Zambia has recognized this and to improve access to healthcare and address health workforce shortages in rural areas, the Ministry of Health developed and implemented a National CHW Strategy in 2010 that introduced a new cadre of healthcare workers called Community Health Assistants (CHA). After one year of training, the pilot class of CHA was deployed in September 2012.
CHAI is pleased to inform that the manuscript of the 2013 CHA process evaluation has been published in the Journal of Community Health and is available online. The objective of this paper is to present the process evaluation findings on the barriers and facilitators of implementing the pilot CHA program, and how evidence was used to guide on-going implementation and scale-up decisions.
