A database of local vaccine manufacturing commitments and tech-transfers

The database makes visible donor commitments and tech-transfers to promote local vaccine manufacturing

According to the World Health Organization, there are fewer than 10 manufacturers with vaccine production on the African continent. This has contributed to countries on the continent lagging behind Europe and North America in securing and distributing COVID-19 vaccinations. The inequitable access to COVID-19 vaccines has resulted in political momentum to advance local vaccine manufacturing not just in Africa but across countries in Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East.

The African Union has set a bold goal to increase regional manufacturing of routine and outbreak vaccines used on the continent from one to 60 percent by 2040. While increasing Africa’s vaccine manufacturing capacity will be a multi-year, complex undertaking that will require stakeholders across the public, private, and social sectors to work together and create a robust enabling environment, COVID-19 has highlighted its necessity.

CHAI is supporting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to scope commitments towards local vaccine manufacturing. This database is compiled from public sources and gives an overview of donor commitments and technology transfers supporting local vaccine manufacturing—with a focus on COVID-19 vaccines. It also facilitates partner coordination and makes it easier to identify significant investments, partnerships, projects, donors, and beneficiaries meant to advance local manufacturing initiatives in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The database will be updated twice a month as new developments emerge in the local vaccine manufacturing space.
