Recognizing that Universal health coverage (UHC) cannot be realized without an adequate health workforce, CHAI along with the UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID), have been supporting the Zambian Ministry of Health since 2010 to recruit, train and deploy a motivated community-based health workforce. Known as Community Health Assistants (CHAs), these workers have been deployed through a National Community Health Worker (CHW) Strategy.
This policy brief reviews structure, implementation, and evidence-base around the CHA workforce as it continues to be scaled-up to meet the health needs of Zambia’s rural population.
