CHAI and MedAccess seek proposals to support development of a robust market shaping deal pipeline

Published June 11th, 2018

This request for proposal (RfP) is to solicit competitive bids for grants to support MedAccess and CHAI in generating a pipeline of early-stage market shaping opportunities applicable to products and services for communicable and non-communicable diseases in lower- and middle-income countries.

Established in November 2017 with an initial capitalization of US$200 million, MedAccess provides volume guarantees to reduce the business risks that can delay large-scale access to critical products at affordable and sustainable prices. Health commodities such as medicines, diagnostics, and vaccines can be caught in market failures – in particular, the high-price/low volume trap where small sales volumes discourage price reductions, and the first mover trap where neither suppliers nor purchasers are willing to take the initial risk to bring a new product to market at scale.

CHAI has an ongoing collaboration with MedAccess to support the development of a robust market shaping deal pipeline, which includes identifying and vetting potential opportunities that meet the MedAccess development impact objectives and that may be suitable for the application of a volume guarantee or other market shaping intervention.

Under this RfP, CHAI and MedAccess are seeking support from outside organizations to help bolster early screening and scoping efforts. Priority areas include, though are not limited to: neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), global health security commodities (GHS), non-communicable diseases (NCDs), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), fever management, diagnostics, medical devices, medical equipment, innovative drug delivery mechanisms, service delivery opportunities, and health information systems.

CHAI will undergo a competitive selection process to identify organizations and consultants with the desired skills and expertise. The first step in this process is to submit a proposal in response to this RfP by July 2, 2018 at 5pm EDT. For more information on the specific scope of work, expected deliverables, and indicative budget, please refer to the RfP document. Potential responders are encouraged to submit any questions, which CHAI will collect and upload in a Q&A document to be posted on CHAI’s website – for details on this, please refer to the RfP.
