Vaccines
The Issue
Immunization is one of the most successful health interventions in history. In addition to saving lives and being highly cost effective, immunization contributes to economic and social security, increased labor productivity, and improved cognitive and educational achievements for children. Yet, one out of every five children, an estimated 20 million each year, do not receive even the most basic vaccines. More than 1.5 million children die from vaccine-preventable diseases annually, with the majority of these deaths in low- and middle-income countries where vaccines are often unavailable.
CHAI's Approach
CHAI works to save lives and immunize as many children as possible by creating dramatic and sustainable improvements to vaccine markets and national immunization programs. Globally, we negotiate prices with manufacturers to make vaccines and the temperature-controlled supply chains needed to deliver them, more affordable. We directly support 11 countries in Africa and Asia to improve uptake of and access to existing, underused and new vaccines. We focus on better service delivery, logistics management systems, and support for countries transitioning from donor funding in order to sustain the gains already made in immunization coverage over the long-term. Alongside our partners, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the ELMA Vaccines & Immunization Foundation, World Health Organization (WHO), and UNICEF, our work benefits 128 million children born every year.
