Our Programs
Our Programs
Our programs aim to save lives and reduce disease, while helping governments create sustainable health systems. We operate 20 programs across four health areas, with a global team of science, business, and technical experts supporting the entire organization.
Infectious Diseases
Four infectious diseases cause the majority of deaths in low- and middle-income countries around the world. CHAI has built on the expertise of staff and the on-the-ground experience developed with our HIV work, to address each of these diseases, in partnership with governments, donors, and other key stakeholders.

Women and Children's Health
Women and children suffer the greatest burden from disease globally. CHAI has significantly increased access to recommended treatments for diarrhea and pneumonia, the largest killers of children under five; made critical vaccines that protect against childhood illnesses more affordable; is combating chronic malnutrition; and is dramatically and sustainably reducing maternal deaths, including from cervical cancer; and is ensuring that women have access to the tools they need to safely plan their families to improve health outcomes and economic well-being.

Non-Communicable Diseases
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory conditions, diabetes, and sickle cell disease now account for 75 percent of deaths globally, making them the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Low- and middle-income countries are disproportionately affected, with over three-quarters of NCD-related fatalities occurring in these regions. Moreover, they face enormous inequities in access to affordable care and commodities compared to high income countries. To address these urgent needs CHAI has programs focused on cancer- including cervical cancer- diabetes, hypertension, and sickle cell disease. Through these initiatives, CHAI aims to expand access to diagnosis and treatment for NCDs, working hand-in-hand with governments to ensure our plans are sustainable and appropriate for local contexts and needs.

Health Systems
CHAI’s founding mission and ultimate goal is to help countries create high-quality, sustainable health care systems that provide universal health coverage for all people. To achieve this, we work with governments to strengthen national financing systems, including establishing national health insurance plans, that can be sustained for years to come. We also help develop systems to educate healthcare professionals at all levels and to build sufficient physical infrastructure to deliver health services.
Health Systems
Climate and Health
When we talk about climate change, the dialogue is often centered around degrees of temperature increased or tons of carbon emitted. These numbers are not connected back to their impact on human lives. The World Bank estimates that 21 million people could die by 2050 from risks triggered by climate change—risks such as malnutrition, malaria, dengue, diarrhea, and heat stress. Despite this, funding for climate and health is limited and challenges remain in identifying key risks and solutions. We believe health needs to be at the center of discussions around climate change.

Cross-Cutting Experts
CHAI works with governments and companies around the world to fundamentally change the economics of global health. Using a holistic, business-minded approach to secure lower prices for key commodities such as medication and diagnostics, improve laboratories, and connect decision-makers with the high-quality evidence they need to inform health policy, CHAI helps patients in low- and middle-income countries access the care and treatment they need. Our science and business experts work across the organization to support our program and country teams.
